The pursuit of safety often results in inefficiency. That is a price we must be aware of. I congratulate Dr. Russ and her colleagues in taking a tough look at the problem described. In my ten years, I've noticed more alerts/order checks. And while I appreciate the need to pursue safety I'm afraid there is now an additional "cost" to this pursuit of safety: danger. And the danger occurs because I know that I (and colleagues) are LESS likely to pay attention to alerts. Receiving an order check when renewing an existing, currently well tolerated drug is simply "noise" not "signal". I believe that "less is more": trying to get consensus on what is "critical" is the tough part.
